PRACTICE MEET, LARKHILL ROAD, APRIL 2025
Date: 13th April 2025
Location: Larkhill Road, Dobcross
Conditions: Cloudy and cool in the morning, clearing in the afternoon
After the recent protracted spell of hot weather, it was probably welcomed that it was cloudier and cooler. Fortunately, none of the forecast showers arrived.
About a dozen or so turned out, some having travelled quite a distance for the experience. The Odyssey, which is the rebuilding of the walls on both sides of Larkhill Road, continued. In the first hour or so, the next section of wall was dismantled and heaped at the sides.
The hardy gang of workers ranged from the very experienced, to the quite experienced, to the hardly experienced at all – although the level of enthusiasm was uniformly very high.
The large foundation stones were fairly quickly in place, and the rest of the day saw steady upward progress as the heaps of stones gradually diminished to be lodged in their new positions in the wall. The new section was skillfully knitted into the previously renewed section of the wall. The end result was a wall just short of having the toppers added.
One definite advantage of this well-frequented lane is the amount of interest generated by passers-by, with a range of questions and the universal appreciation of what the group was doing.
