PRACTICE MEET, BOARSHURST, MARCH 2025
Date: 8th March 2025
Location: Boarshurst
Conditions: Sunny and warm
Spring was definitely in the air at the March meet. It was a perfectly dry, sunny and (unseasonably) warm day to carry on with the work at Boarshurt. Eleven wallers turned up to help finish the section of the wall along a steep slope, which members had been working on since December.
The work started slowly but surely by gathering suitable stone for building up the wall which was then at about knee high in most places. The priority was given to the largest and wonkiest stones left at this stage, which meant heaving them up the slope. The wheelbarrow’s tyre didn’t survive this ordeal, and backs were certainly put to the test.
Then the more rewarding task of building could start with people setting up in pairs and divided between the two sections of wall forming an opening in the middle for a gate.
It was a smaller turnout than usual but not any less jovial, and the more experienced could spent more time teaching the less experienced.
After a hot lunchtime in the sunbaked greenhouse, the team renewed their effort to build up as many sections of the wall as possible. By the end of the afternoon several parts were completed, with toppers propped and ‘nibbled’.
It was another great day for the branch, and dry stone walling actually dry stones was appreciated!
